Units 7 & 9
|
Transportation Mode & Hunt Style All hunting in Units 9 & 7 is carried out in 4-wheel drive vehicles, on both the Mule Deer and Elk hunts. Both of these fine Hunt Units are located approximately 40 miles north and west of Grants, New Mexico at the foothills of the extinct volcano Mt. Taylor. The area to which Old West has access comes to over 100,000 acres of prime Elk and Antelope country. Methods used for pursuit of game in Unit 9 during the Muzzleloader hunts vary from Calling the animals, to Spot and Stalk, and Standing in the vicinity of waterholes. We always get into some great rut action in Unit 9. As for Unit # 7, it is primarily a Spot and Stalk area due to its sparse cover, especially when compared to Unit 9. The majority of hunts in Unit 7 take place after the rut has run it's course. Generally speaking, the Bulls are in Bachelor Herds at that time. This property is used for livestock grazing.
Terrain and Elevation Terrain in these two Units is pretty forgiving for the most part, although we can wear you out on a few Mesa crossings if need be. The vegetation on this property consists mainly of Pinion Pine and Juniper, Chamise and Four Winged Saltbush... a major food source for our Elk. The average elevation runs between 7000 and 8000 feet above sea level. This ranch has beautiful grassy parks, especially spectacular when Mother Nature provides adequate rainfall. Between the Indian history and old settler's homes, this property is rich in many ways.
Lodging, Meals and Guiding We have a spacious, refurbished Ranch House for our Clients who hunt Units 9 & 7. It includes 4 bedrooms, two spacious living room areas, a kitchen and a bathroom. We have also constructed a real nice Gazebo on the east end of the lodge for our Client's enjoyment in the afternoon hours. And we have constructed a very nice skinning shed at this location that has a large walk-in cooler. All meals are prepared on site by competent cooks, and all of our Guide Staff for these hunts are local residents. |
