ABORTION OPTIONS

by Fred Ferrazzano

By definition, abortion includes not only medically induced procedures but, and in a vast majority of cases, spontaneous causes. As a matter of fact, encyclopedic data shows that at least 25% of all conceptions result in either miscarriages or stillbirths. Further, data statistically extrapolated, indicated that this outcome produces at least twenty seven-million unplanned abortions annually and growing. Why then are the anti-abortion forces concentrating only on those comparatively few elective procedures? Having asked this question when in dialogue with a number of so-called pro-life proponents, such vague answers are provided as "well, that's a natural process over which we have no control" or "this is God's will and cannot be questioned." These answers have been thoughtfully examined and rejected. It is troublesome to be told that our creator, who provided us generously with intellect and free will, would not want us to exercise some degree of control over these processes or to at least question our options. The further question also rises as to the disposition of the souls of aborted fetuses. Are we to imagine that these eternal souls are somehow destroyed or that upon the termination of the mortal body do they also rise again to be reborn at the will of the almighty?

As to our available options, it is also established that a significant percentage of spontaneous abortions can be avoided by such simple precautions as good nutrition and adequate prenatal medical care. Should these "anti- abortion" alternatives be made available to all or just to the well educated, monied minority? Assuming that the politically correct answer is "to as many as would be reasonably possible," why don't we shift our strategy from attempting to force "big government" controls on abortion and other social programs through such questionable tactics as amendments to the constitution (keep in mind that the last amendment- the 27th, took 203 years to become ratified by the 38th state), to providing assistance, on a world wide basis, through the many agencies already established to help the needy?

Wouldn't this be a wonderful opportunity for the many fine religious groups to come together and to exercise their collective, powerful influence in an active, productive way to solve this worldwide problem rather than to just preach at their congregations? They might not merely point out the sins of the world to their parishioners but instead show their members the alternatives that will allow for participation in the process thus enabling them to achieve salvation.

Leadership is the attribute which is most needed in today's philosophical milieu. Well formulated and directed programs coordinated by proven leaders will produce a strong followship that can achieve almost any objective. Of course, locating such dedicated commanders is no mean task. They must also possess humility and be willing to subordinate their personal agenda to the needs of the poor masses. These qualities seem to be inconsistent with the requirements imposed by the electorate on their political representatives. They are out here among us however, and we must insist that they be identified, suitably installed in the proper framework, tasked to accomplish the job and supported in the effort. This is a terrific opportunity for such would-be world leaders as Pat Buchanan, J. C. Watts and Ralph Reed to produce a thoughtful evolution of ideas, rather than a counterproductive radical revolution.
