From W. R. Schmid: PTA Commercial Attacking Proposition 227 |
Dear COGG:
I discovered your organization's web site tonight after being angered by seeing a PTA sponsored commercial on TV attacking Proposition 227. I was pleased to see your letter to the AG concerning school district violations of the Educ. Code.
I am a parent with school age children. Over the years I have observed how my kids are manipulated in the classroom, on public property by public employees, to badger their parents into joining the PTA. I believe that many local PTAs actually do some good for their schools, but the state organization is nothing more than a puppet of the teachers unions, the Dept. of Educ., and the left wing of the Democrat Party. I very much resent a portion of my dues, even though small, going to the state PTA to be used for propaganda against my own political positions, and, in many cases, about issues that are none of the PTA's business, such as smoking in Indian reservation casinos.
Now the PTA is attacking Prop. 227 with money contributed in the form of dues by hundreds of thousands of parents because the State PTA Board of Managers voted on January 16, 1998, to oppose it. This is similar to the situation in the labor unions that Prop. 226 is an attempt to alleviate: many parents do not know that some of their money is going to the State PTA and they have no input into decisions about how it is spent.
There must be something illegal about this. What do you think?
Very truly yours,
W. R. Schmid Fullerton CA
